Australia’s freedom church, Freedom Church, to be sold
Posted October 02, 2018 16:59:51The Freedom Church in Melbourne’s western suburbs is to be auctioned off to raise funds for the Anglican Diocese of Victoria.
The Freedom church, located in an inner-Melbourne suburb, was founded in 1873 and has a congregation of some 500 people.
The church’s founder and current pastor, Reverend Pauline Campbell, was the first African-American to be ordained as a priest in the Anglicans Diocese.
The congregation is part of the Anglicannual Fellowship, a network of churches in the Western Australia diocese that was established in 2003.
The Anglican diocese of Australia is the second largest in the country.
It was formed in 1999 and has some 3,500 churches in 28 Australian states.
The Church of the Nazarene in Melbourne is expected to sell for up to $1 million, with proceeds going to the Anglicanean Diocesan Welfare Foundation.
The sale comes after it was reported last year that Freedom Church founder Reverend Campbell, 83, was being investigated by the Victorian Police for allegedly being an unregistered sex offender.
