When Utah Church Fires its First Baptist Church
Lakewood Church in Salt Lake City has been forced to close for a time because of fire concerns, but the church says it’s just the latest church to face a fire.
The fire broke out Tuesday evening and is still under investigation.
Firefighters say they’ve been able to put out some small flames, but they’ve seen others burn more quickly.
The church’s leader, David McNeil, says the fire is being handled by fire officials and he is working with fire investigators to get the church back on its feet.
McNeil says he has been meeting with officials from the Utah Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to get some information about what sparked the fire.
McNeill says the church has a large number of buildings that have burned, and they’ve made changes to how they handle fire safety.
He says that they’ve replaced a sprinkler system that caught on fire last year, and that they’re now looking into putting in a sprinklers system that can be controlled remotely.
McNernon says the congregation has been in touch with fire officials in Utah and that he hopes to have all the details ready before the end of the week.
He also says he will continue to contact the local church members.
