A church in the eastern Bulgarian town of Odesa has fallen into a crisis after it lost more than a quarter of its membership, a report has said.

The Orthodox Church in Odesy has fewer than 10,000 members, while the number of Muslims is almost as many as the population of the town of 2.2 million.

“We’ve lost the majority of our members, about half, since 2011, but we still have a large proportion of converts, even if we’ve lost some of them,” Patriarch Georgi Svetoslav said in a televised sermon.

The church, founded in 976 and named after the prophet, was founded on a site on the shore of the Black Sea, which was later destroyed by a volcanic eruption.

The Patriarch was speaking after a meeting with a local Muslim cleric, who said that Muslims in Odea had been trying to join the church since it was founded.

“The situation has worsened in recent years, as the church has become more and more isolated and marginalised,” said the Muslim cleric.

The local council has decided to expel all of the non-Orthodox Christians, with the rest of the population facing possible expulsion.

The Muslim cleric said that the Orthodox church had lost the support of the Muslim population, including members of the family of the church’s patriarch.

“There are some Muslims who don’t believe in Orthodoxy, but in our community, many of them are Orthodox Christians,” he said.
