What are the big issues facing the Mormon Church?

A look at the big controversies facing the church, with emphasis on some of the issues that are often not mentioned in the media.
1.
The church’s new policy regarding gay marriage.
The policy was approved in 2016 and took effect last month.
It was initially thought to have little impact on church members, but the policy has now come under scrutiny as a major blow to the church.
It has also been condemned by gay rights activists as an attack on the fundamental values of the church which should be respected.
2.
The Mormon church’s handling of the revelation that Jesus Christ was a prophet of God.
The church announced the revelation on May 17, 2016.
In a news conference on the same day, the church said that if people in the church “continue to accept this revelation as scripture, it is to be accepted as scripture”.
The church said it was an act of obedience to God, but said it would not be “discipleship”.
It also said that the revelation had not been changed in its original language.
The revelation was eventually taken down from the church’s website and replaced with an apology from its leader, Kevin Swanson.
3.
The issue of paedophilia.
The issue has become a hot button topic in the Mormon church, as a wave of revelations has come from the prophet Joseph Smith in the early 1900s.
In 2008, the Mormon leader Brigham Young became the first apostle to admit that Joseph Smith had committed sexual misconduct.
But the church has defended its leadership by saying it does not tolerate paedophiles, and says that its policies are designed to protect children from sexual predators.
4.
The gay rights issue.
The Mormon church has a long history of supporting gay rights.
The first major policy was in 1978 when the church banned the ordination of gay men and women.
In the early 2000s, the policy changed, but some church members said it had not done enough.
The policy was later reversed.
5.
The handling of child abuse allegations.
The abuse of children in the 1980s was one of the main scandals surrounding the church in the 1990s, which caused major public criticism of the LDS church and the leadership.
Since then, the issue has been widely covered by the media and has received a lot of attention from other churches.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) has been the subject of numerous investigations into abuse and has repeatedly defended its leaders.
The most recent allegations came from former Mormon church member, Jared Lee Loughner, who killed 14 people and wounded more than 50 others during a rampage in Colorado Springs in April 2016.
6.
The sexual abuse of minors by members of the Church of Christ.
The sexual abuse allegations have been the focus of much media attention in recent years.
A lot of people have been hurt by the abuse, including some members of LDS church.
The LDS church has acknowledged the allegations against its leadership, but has denied any wrongdoing.
The allegations against the church have also been a source of embarrassment for the church and its leadership.
7.
The debate about the use of church property and property donations to pay for the temple.
The LDS church does not have a legal right to control its property, but church leaders have used church property for several occasions.
The question has arisen as to whether the church should be allowed to spend money from its temple construction to pay its costs.
The Utah Supreme Court has ruled that the church is allowed to use temple construction funds to pay costs.
8.
The recent revelation regarding homosexuality.
The revelation in February 2016 that Jesus was a “son of God” has sparked controversy among Mormons.
It comes after the church issued a statement that said: “I think the statement is wrong.
Jesus is not a son of God.”
The church later said it did not intend to speak to the issue at the time, but changed its stance.
9.
The use of funds from the LDS temple to pay legal bills.
The $12.7 million in church funds used for legal expenses was approved by the church as part of its plan to pay off a $40 million debt.
The legal bills came to light in 2016 when a former member of the leadership team filed a lawsuit accusing church leaders of violating his civil rights.
10.
The impact of the gay rights controversy.
In 2014, a video surfaced showing church members engaging in a debate on gay rights, including members of some gay Mormon families who were upset that gay couples could not get married.
The controversy has also led to the resignation of church leaders, and has led to calls for a boycott of the Mormon temple, which was being built in the United States.
11.
The role of scripture in church leadership.
In his 2016 General Conference address, President Thomas S. Monson said that “the scriptures are the basis of the gospel”.
In response to a question on the impact of homosexuality on the church after the video surfaced, Monson wrote: “Yes, the scriptures do tell us that Jesus is the son of Mary.
